Volunteer Service Project

Two elementary-school youngsters joined 10 Kiwanians working at the Guy B. Woodward Museum on the last Saturday in August. The project, organized by Ramona Pioneer Historical Society President and Kiwanian Pat Donovan, was held in lieu of the service organization’s Aug. 31 breakfast meeting. The club this year works on a community service project each month with a fifth Saturday. Participating on Aug. 31 were club President Darryl Albertson and Kiwanians Liz Albertson, Jeanne Bell, David Flook, Bill Pierce, Maureen Robertson, Jon Stephens, Pene Manale, President-elect Tiffany Lynch, and Donovan. Two of Lynch’s daughters, Magnolia and Sidney, also volunteered to work. Assignments included outdoor and indoor projects.

Empowering Fathers

Kiwanis Club of Ramona President Darryl Albertson presents Ralph Muniz, the club’s guest speaker on July 20, with a club pin. At left is Kiwanian Susan White, who as Kiwanian of the Day invited Muniz to the breakfast meeting in Denny’s restaurant. Muniz, a Ramona resident, is a father advocate with Empowering Fathers. Funded by San Diego County, the program offers a variety of free services. Among them are support groups for dads, advocacy for fathers’ rights, workshops for father improvement, activities for fathers and children (ex. Park days, sporting events, and trips to places such as SeaWorld and museums.

Shoes, Socks and Underwear 

Kiwanis Club of Ramona President Darryl Albertson presents a check for $1,000 to Debbie Benson, left, and Dawn Kezer of St. Mary’s in the Valley Episcopal Church’s Shoes/Socks/Underwear Program. The donation will go toward the program’s goal of helping up to 100 schoolchildren in need purchase new shoes, socks, and underwear before the start of the 2024-25 school year.

Sherry MaGarry, Bill Pierce and Jona Barns updated pamphlets for the museum. Paul Tarr painted wooden slats for the wagon. Maureen Robertson and Pat Donovan sanded wagon wheels. Ken Burns , Pat Bell and Jon Stephens repainted the fence. Many other members were also involved with our day of volunteering.

Watermelon Cupcakes!

New member welcomed

Kiwanis Club of Ramona President Darryl Albertson, left, and Membership and Growth Chair Pat Bell welcome Pat Donovan as the service organization’s newest member on Saturday, May 25. Donovan, a longtime Ramona resident, is president of the Ramona Pioneer Historical Society that operates the Guy B. Woodward Museum, vice president of the Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Association, and vice president of the Ramona Rodeo Foundation. “You guys get things done and have fun,” he said after his induction ceremony. 

Kiwanis presents check for the Ramona Fireworks 

On behalf of Kiwanis Club of Ramona, President Darryl Albertson presents 2024 July 4th Fireworks Chair and Kiwanian Susan White with a $1,100 check for the Ramona Fireworks Fund at the donation thermometer at 10th and Main streets on Saturday morning, May 25. Ramona Kiwanis awards $4,000 in scholarships to graduating high school seniors 

Past President Chris Bertolero presented Margaret Delaney with a $1,000 Kiwanis Club of Ramona Glae McDonald Scholarship during Mountain Valley Academy’s Awards Night on May 14. Representing Kiwanis Club of Ramona at Ramona High School on May 23, President-elect Tiffany Lynch and President Darryl Albertson presented $1,000 scholarships to Kyla Osuna, Hadassah Ingvoldtsad, and Kayla Gompper.

Dr. Kathryn Gunderson receives special recognition

Dr. Brian Thurman, superintendent of Ramona Unified School District, joined Kiwanis Club of Ramona in giving special recognition and thanks to Dr. Kathryn Gunderson, second from right, principal of Mountain Valley Academy and Ramona Community Montessori School, during Kiwanis’ breakfast meeting on Saturday, April 27. Gunderson will retire at the end of the school year after 26 years as a teacher, curriculum coordinator and administrator in the district. Ramona Kiwanian Jon Stephens, KOD on March 16, holds the club pin he received from President Darryl Albertson after talking about sausage making, one of his many hobbies. In addition to sharing details, fun facts, safety tips and trivia about sausage making, Jon brought two types of sausages he makes for everyone to sample.
