A sport that’s been gaining popularity will be the focus of Kiwanis Club of Ramona’s next fundraiser.
Presented by the Kiwanis service organization, Ramona Cornhole Challenge will be on Saturday, June 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Ramona Outdoor Community Center, 421 Aqua Lane. The event will feature competitive and recreational cornhole contests, DJ music, food, Family Fun Zone, opportunity drawings, a silent auction, beer, wine, soft drinks, kettle corn, and, in honor of Father’s Day, a free hot dog for every dad.
Entry fee is $50 for competing teams and $20 for recreational teams. A cash prize of $500 will go to the competitive team placing first and $250 for the competitive team placing second. Trophies will go to the top recreational team finishers.
General admission for those not competing is $10 for adults and teens and $30 for a family pack with two adults and children. Kids aged 10 and younger are admitted free.
Ramona residents Rita and Carl Brown, owners of State 31 Cornhole Company, are organizing and running the tournaments. The Browns, who have full-time jobs — Carl in construction and Rita in the insurance industry — created their professional cornhole company nearly three years ago. Two years ago they operated the competitive cornhole tournament held in conjunction with Kiwanis Club of Ramona’s Music Fest in the West. The tournament was so popular, Kiwanians decided to feature an expanded tournament this year and add recreational teams to the fun.
“It’s a two-pronged effort — provide the region with a wholesome community event and at the same time raise money toward club projects benefiting children, military families, seniors, and the town,” said Ramona Kiwanis Fundraising Chair Pat Bell said. “The club recently donated $750 to the successful construction program at Montecito High School, gave $4,000 in scholarships to seniors graduating from Ramona high schools this June, and is again donating $1,100 toward the chamber’s July 4th Fireworks as well as collecting fireworks donations in front of Ramona supermarkets.”
DJ Lenny Howell will provide the music, and attendees are welcome to dance. Kiwanians Susan White and Jeanne Bell are preparing a variety of themed opportunity drawing baskets. Donations for baskets may be brought to the Ramona Disposal Services office at 324 Maple St., where White has a room for donations, or call Jeanne Bell at 760-789-5934.
Montecito High School construction students have made two sets of cornhole boards and a bench for the silent auction. Another silent auction item is a Ryobi 40V High Performance Cordless lawn mower valued at $259.
In addition, tickets are available for $10 each for the chance to win a Golden Boy Silver Father’s Day Edition .22 Long Henry’s rifle valued at $845.
Kettle corn will be available at the Family Fun Zone, which will feature an array of activities, and the food booth will offer favorites such as hamburgers, cheeseburgers, veggie burgers, brats, hot dogs, nachos, sodas, bottled water, and chips with prices ranging from $1 to $5. Adult beverages will be $6 each.
Sponsorships range from $100 to $750, with details available from Ramona Kiwanis President-elect Tiffany Lynch at 619-871-3721 or [email protected]. Checks may be made payable to Kiwanis Club of Ramona Foundation and mailed to P.O. Box 275, Ramona, CA 92065.
More information about the event is available at the Ramona Kiwanis Facebook page, online at k05182.site.kiwanis.org, or from Pat Bell at 760-533-4884. Teams may preregister at the Ramona Kiwanis website under The Ramona Cornhole Challenge or via the app scoreholio.
